Looking for a way to DIY a reasonably priced upgrade to my Chevy Silverado, I decided to purchase an air intake system on QuickSnap Auto Parts On a recommendation from a friend, I purchased the Volant Closed Air Intake System. I didn’t know anything about the Volant brand prior to purchase, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when it arrived at my home. I was pleasantly surprised to find a neatly packaged system in an 18’ x 21’ x 15” box with the instructions clearly secured to the outer flap. I was also very impressed to learn about Volant’s Lifetime Warranty,
I’m somewhat handy when it comes to installing automotive components, but by no means a mechanic. I felt confident tackling this challenge since the instructions were clearly laid out in a step-by-step manner with associated pictures for each step. The only tools required were a socket set, a screw driver and a star Torx bit, which is usually included in any large socket kit. The instructions stated the bit was included; however one was not in mine. The only hiccup during disassembly of the OEM system was with the removal of the MAF harness. The instructions said to “push out the red locking tab”, then remove the harness. Well, it wasn’t quite that simple. After quite a bit of tooling and head scratching, I realized there is a small black tab to press under the red locking tab. A mention of that in the instructions would have saved 20 minutes of frustration and a nearly destroyed harness.
Once the OEM system was removed, the new Volant system was easy to install. Everything fit well and all holes lined up properly. I was a little unsure how to secure the bolts into the Volant box, as the instructions seemed to imply I would have access. Looking at the next step in the instructions, I realized my system came with their PowerCore filter already installed. Simply uninstalling the filter from the box solved that issue and I was well on my way.
So, all told, the install was relatively easy and only took 1.5hrs. Some of that time spent scratching my head to figure out minor gaps in the instructions. Being fair to the manufacturer, some of those items might be assumed by a more experienced installer. I am very pleased with the look of the closed box system. It looks very clean and makes the engine bay more impressive.
